The go-ahead has been given by Neath Port Talbot Council for the next stage of the redevelopment of Neath’s town centre. The next phase will create a row of 5 large stores that will link the new multi-storey car park and Wilko to Wind Street and Boots allowing seamless shopping from the multi storey to the centre of town.
The new stores will complement the existing large stores, Marks and Spencer, Boots, Next, New Look and other national brands, improving the shopping offer and bringing increased footfall that all shops and Neath Market will benefit from.
Neath Port Talbot Council will now commission a contractor to deliver the retail scheme, with work on site to start next year.
Council leader, Councillor Rob Jones, said: “This council is very aware of the pressures that traditional town centres are coming under from online shopping and out-of-town retail parks. We are determined to ensure that Neath continues to be an attractive destination for businesses, shoppers, residents and visitors alike.”
Andrew Shufflebotham, Neath Inspired Limited, Business Improvement District Manager commented that “Neath Port Talbot Council’s commitment to developing and improving Neath Town Centre has been welcomed by Neath BID Businesses and other traders.” He said “it will prove to be the catalyst to increase footfall and benefit both retailers and loyal local shoppers who have been waiting for this development to go ahead for some time.”
Ahead of the larger New Development another phase will start in Spring, with a row of six smaller retail shops by Coastal Housing, linking the Greyhound Pub to Orchard Street, with Water Street and Orchard Street being widened to improve pedestrian links to Neath’s Gwyn Hall, Victoria Gardens and the Bus Station.
Significant investment from private companies and individuals has already shown growing confidence in Neath, Moruzzi & Co have considerably enlarged their attractive coffee shop and wine bar, Charlie’s Wine Bar & Grill and the Castle hotel complement existing favourites like the Ambassador Hotel and the Bluebell & La Mancha.
A comprehensive range of highly successful seasonal events: Neath Food & Drink Festival, the Real Ale & Cider Festival, the Great Guitar Gig, the Christmas Lights On and several others [See http://www.neathinspired.co.uk/ for next year’s dates] ensure that Neath offers all round interest, vibrancy and a great ambience for all the family.
